IV Sedation

Burleson, Texas

Many people avoid the dentist not because they don't care about their teeth, but because they dread the thought of setting foot in a dentist's office. It may have started with a not-so-pleasant experience years ago. Maybe the sounds and sensations just put you on edge, no matter how many times you've tried to push through it. For some patients, the anxiety is severe enough that they put off dental care for years, which almost always makes things worse and more expensive in the long run.

At My Burleson Dentist, we offer IV sedation to help even our most anxious patients feel calm and relaxed in the dentist's chair. We strive to ensure you enjoy a comfortable dental care experience every step of the way. We invite you to visit our Burleson practice to get started today

Dental anxiety is real. And so is our commitment to making sure it never keeps you from the care you deserve.

What Is IV Sedation?

IV sedation involves delivering sedative medication directly into your bloodstream through a small IV line placed in your arm. It works quickly and creates a deep, calm state of relaxation. You will remain conscious throughout the procedure, but you won't feel anxious. Many patients describe their experience as feeling like they blinked and it was all over.

Unlike general anesthesia, IV sedation doesn't require a hospital setting or a breathing tube. It's administered right here in the office, and we monitor you carefully throughout the procedure. The medication also has amnesic properties, meaning most patients have little, if any, memory of the appointment. For patients who have avoided dental care because of past trauma, this can genuinely be life-changing.

You're in Excellent Hands at My Burleson Dentist

Dr. Davis completed IV sedation certification through a rigorous 12-month Advanced Education in General Dentistry (AEGD) residency program, not the 4-week course many dentists complete. His extensive training took place in a clinical setting at a VA hospital in Temple, Texas, where he gained hands-on experience administering IV sedation. With his advanced training, skill, and expertise, you can trust that you are in capable hands.

What About Nitrous Oxide?

We also offer nitrous oxide, sometimes called laughing gas, a lighter sedation option. You'll inhale nitrous oxide mixed with oxygen through a small mask placed over your nose, and before you know it, you'll find yourself with a pleasant, relaxed, floating sensation. This form of sedation kicks in quickly and wears off almost immediately, meaning you can drive yourself home after treatment. We'll help you decide between nitrous and IV sedation based on how anxious you feel, how complex your treatment is, and your personal preferences.

Who Is a Candidate for Sedation Dentistry?

Candidates for sedation dentistry may include the following:

  • Patients with dental anxiety or dental phobia
  • Patients needing multiple procedures
  • Patients who've had past traumatic dental experiences
  • Patients with a strong gag reflex that interferes with treatment
  • Patients who find it challenging to sit still for extended periods
  • Patients wanting a more relaxed, comfortable dental experience

What to Expect on the Day of Your Sedation Appointment

If you're having IV sedation, you'll need to arrange a ride home ahead of time. We'll review your health history and any medications you're taking and provide you with pre-appointment instructions. You'll need to fast, avoiding all foods and beverages for at least six hours prior to your procedure. Water is the only exception and is permitted up to two hours before your appointment.

On the day of your appointment, wear comfortable clothing, leave the jewelry at home, and plan to relax at home for the rest of the day. Most patients feel perfectly normal by the following morning.
