Wisdom Teeth Extractions
Burleson, Texas
Wisdom teeth are your third molars, the very last set of permanent teeth to develop. They typically appear around the mid-teens and early twenties. The problem is that most people simply don't have enough room in their jaw to accommodate them. When a wisdom tooth can't erupt in a normal, upright position, it becomes impacted, meaning it stays trapped beneath the gum line or pushes in at an angle against the tooth next to it.
Impacted wisdom teeth are more than a small inconvenience. They can cause significant pain, create hard-to-clean pockets where bacteria thrive, damage the roots of neighboring teeth, contribute to cyst formation in the jaw, and trigger crowding that undoes orthodontic work. Removing problematic wisdom teeth is one of the most commonly performed oral surgical procedures for promoting lifelong oral health. We invite you to visit our Burleson practice to get started today.
Our Treatments
The best time to remove wisdom teeth is before they become a problem.
Why Earlier Is Almost Always Better
Here's something we tell every family with teenagers: the ideal time to remove wisdom teeth is during the teen years, often before the teeth are causing any symptoms. At that stage, the roots are shorter and less fully formed, the surrounding bone is more flexible, and younger patients heal significantly faster with fewer complications. It's a much simpler procedure at sixteen or seventeen than it is at thirty-five.
We see patients all the time who wait until the teeth are painful, infected, or already causing damage to nearby teeth. By then, the extractions are more complex, the recovery is harder, and in some cases, there's been bone loss or root damage that didn't have to happen. We evaluate your teen's wisdom tooth development during routine exams, and we'll have a conversation about whether and when removal makes sense. Our goal is to safeguard your teen’s future oral health.
Your Comfort Is Our Priority
Dr. Davis is certified in IV sedation, and for wisdom tooth extractions, especially when we're removing multiple teeth in one visit, it's an excellent option. IV sedation puts you in a deeply relaxed state. You're not asleep the way you would be under general anesthesia, but you're calm, comfortable, and most patients remember very little about the appointment afterward. This is helpful, especially for younger patients who may otherwise feel anxious about the procedure. We also offer nitrous oxide for patients who prefer a lighter form of sedation. We'll talk through what's right for you before your appointment.
How Does PRF Therapy Enhance Your Care?
We use platelet-rich fibrin (PRF) therapy at the time of wisdom tooth extraction to support healing. We take a small blood sample and spin it in a centrifuge to separate and concentrate the growth factors naturally present in your plasma. We then place that fibrin material directly into the extraction socket before closing the site. PRF has been shown to significantly reduce healing time, improve clot stability, and lower the risk of dry socket, which is a painful complication that can follow an extraction.
Care Tips After Wisdom Teeth Removal
Here are some tips to support healing and ensure a smooth recovery:
- Follow the post-operative instructions we send home.
- Stick to soft foods for the first few days and avoid anything hot, crunchy, or spicy near the extraction sites.
- No straws, smoking, or vigorous rinsing for at least 48 hours to protect the clot forming in the socket.
- Cold compresses on the outside of the jaw can help manage swelling in the first 24 hours.
- Keep up with gentle brushing, but avoid the extraction sites until they've healed.
- Call us if you experience worsening pain, significant swelling, or any other concerns.
